I didn’t actually watch the video the article refers to, but I’m glad I’m not the only one that had a pretty strong visceral reaction against someone’s capture of a Vine (looping, 6-second video) of the tragedy yesterday. I love social media, but I don’t think people have much grasp of appropriateness many times. There’s a line between informing and oversaturating that is crossed way too often, and things like this to me highlight that. I’ve felt like this for a long time.
I have the same issue with broadcast news: the repetition of such imagery just becomes numbing and depressing after a short while, no longer doing its job as news. I’m not saying that it should be done away with, but I do think it needs a massive reexamination. We need to consider what this constant immersion is doing to our mental and emotional health. What it’s doing to our outlook on our quality of life and even humanity as a whole (I saw countless comments yesterday about people’s faith in humanity being shaken or destroyed).
